Just Dead

When I leave this mortal coil
People mourning, that’s the style
Keep in mind what I have said
I’ll not be passing, I’ll be dead

There’ll be no shadows standing round
When I am burned or in the ground
Remember what I’ve clearly said
I haven’t passed, I’m really dead

Newton and Darwin sent to us
Enlightenment that caused a fuss
Despite the work of those fine sages
People talk like in dark ages

Even old you take vacations
Helped along by medications
Where do all those fine meds come from?
The work of science, so don’t act dumb

No one’s passing when they die
They’re gone, the same as you and I
There is one way we might cheat death
Though it won’t return our earthly breath

Build a reputation for doing good
You’ll be a hero in your hood
Fond memories of you will surely thrive
Although your body’s not alive

We have more neurons than a goat
Or a hippo or a stoat
But whether naked or in a coat
We’re really all in the same old boat

Don’t spend time your time pondering
If I’m out there watchin what you do
There’s nobody to be concerned about
Whatcha do, my friend, is up to you

I’ve thought that some day my atoms
Through the universe might blow
But the universe might be infinite
And those atoms just too slow

And as for questions of wherefores and whys
We’re little specks in this vast world’s eyes
Our brains not up to up to ever knowing
Just who we are and where we’re going

If you go to the mountain where the guru lives
And state your query, say tell me what gives
There’s a simple answer he’ll say to your quiz
It’s simple my child, it is what it is

Anyway as I’ve been saying
Don’t bother with any praying
Cause when our final breath is drawn
We won’t be passing, we’ll be gone

Note:  This early and an all-time favorite of mine.
