Charles Darwin’s seminal concepts concerning animal evolution
Proposed the idea of species variation for the solution

Over eons a species gradually changes its form in some way
With a sort of trial and error to sort out the versions that pay

So that hawks with better vision were better able
To get their prey below upon their dinner table

And a human with more neural interconnections in its cortex
Was more successful at hunting and as well as having sex

All this perhaps you know as well as I do
But I had this little introduction to get through

And now the matter that I have most upon my mind today
Namely, the short-term effects of differences that are in play

For most of us it’s a challenge to carry a tune
But someone wrote the gorgeous Clair de Lune

And most don’t find it easy  to draw an oak tree or an apple
Michelangelo painted masterpieces on the ceiling of a chapel

Where would we humans be without Galileo and Einstein
Consider the pleasure watching athletes that are so fine

That’s the upside of the variation in human attributes
The downside will introduce some very nasty brutes

They are the humans abnormally dedicated to power
It appears their moods are always mean and sour

Their goal seems in every case to dominate
Some like Adolf Hitler, become head of state

For many humans theirs strength elicits admiration
It’s only later that one sees the damage to the nation

Those two sides of evolution will never meet
We’ll always have the bitter with the sweet
