My grandad was a frequent source of embarrassment to me
Due mainly to his preoccupation with science and philosophy
When he lived with mom and me I had trouble in my school
When he called the school principal a lousy dumb-ass fool
And he nearly got the whole family run out of our town
When he referred to the preacher as an ignorant clown
Though he’d been raised by family that was deeply religious
His contempt for such views now was truly prodigious
Ideas like prayer, salvation and original sin
Should be long gone after Newton and Darwin
God was handy before science explained so many things
But should be left in the past like emperors and kings
You don’t need any religion to be honest, kind, and true
The way you treat others is the way that they’ll treat you
The main outcome of religion are all the wars he often said
And the innocent bystanders who the wars leave dead
I remember him saying, and he hadn’t been drinking
Look around you now, humans just ain’t good at thinking
What I’ve seen for myself is that grandad was right
People I hear on TV just don’t sound so wvery bright
I’ve decided on a future for which I’m gonna train
I’ll be a teacher and help our kind use its brain
