When I was a schoolgirl we lived out of town on a lake
And I rode into school on a bus
I woke up early one morning so I’d have time to bake
I sat on the bus next to Gus
It was for Gus that I’d got up to bake that nice cake
It was he for whom I made a fuss

This approach seemed to work just the way I had planned
He said thanks and gave me a smile
I began to picture a diamond ring on my hand
I thought we’d would walk down that aisle
Then one day I saw him and Sue out on the sand
And I knew I’d be waiting a while

Those were childish ideas that I had at that time
I saw dreaming might not always pay
Much later I met Gus when he was still in his prime
And it was clear that he now wanted to play
Well extramarital sex might not be a crime
I said that it just wasn’t my way

Many more years then passed till I saw Gus again
It was right here in our little gym
We were stunned that each other were here in the Glen
By that time his prime long had passed him
He had lost Jenny and I had lost Ken
And we no longer looked quite so trim

Well, where this is leading perhaps you surmise
I finally hooked that old fish
He’s not in the best shape but that old guy tries
And let’s face it I’m not a dish
It’s from here that we’ll both say our final goodbyes
Satisfied that I got my first wish
