Let’s try to describe us to a visitor from outer space
Just how shall we characterize our race?
We are a social animal, all science would agree
And that has been the case for all of history
In general, we all repeat the things we do that work
And avoid what makes us look luck a dummy or a jerk
If our friend is in trouble we are there to lend a hand
If a child is in danger we will run to beat the band
If we rank all of our needs at the top is likely food
It is hard to be kind and patient when in a hungry mood
These are some of the many traits that human beings share
But to avoid how we greatly differ is not to be quite fair
Just think of your own family and all of your good friends
Some who can’t admit an error, others quick to make amends
Some are tall, others short, some handsome, others not so much
Some are always loyal to friends, others missing in the clutch
Look at our world’s leaders, what they say and how they act
Some are quite straightforward, others seldom state a fact
Loud and vicious people in all parts of the globe
Then there’s the Dali Lama, calm and quiet in his robe
Are all us different people bent in the same direction
What traits are going to win in natural selection
How much is up to us, how much to luck and chance
And which way do I place my bet? Shed a tear or dance?
